Car Air‑Conditioning System: How Your Vehicle AC Works & Maintenance Tips

Vehicle air‑conditioning is not only for cooling in hot summer. It also handles heating, dehumidification and defogging. It greatly improves riding comfort in all weather conditions. Both private car owners and overseas dealers need basic knowledge of car AC to avoid common faults and unnecessary costs.

Core Components of Car Air‑Conditioning

Compressor

Regarded as the heart of AC system. Driven by the car engine, it compresses refrigerant gas, providing power for the whole cooling cycle.

Condenser

Usually installed in front of the radiator. It cools down high‑pressure gaseous refrigerant and turns it into liquid.

Expansion Valve

Reduces refrigerant pressure and temperature. Liquid refrigerant becomes mist before entering the evaporator.

Evaporator

Refrigerant absorbs heat here. The blower passes air across the cold evaporator, and cold air flows into the cabin.

Refrigerant

Heat‑transfer medium inside closed pipelines. Insufficient refrigerant directly leads to weak cooling performance.

Cabin Air Filter

Filters dust, pollen and debris from incoming air. It is a low‑cost but critical consumable part.

Typical AC Fault Phenomena

❄️ Weak or no cold air: Common causes include insufficient refrigerant, blocked condenser, compressor failure or dirty cabin filter.

🫧 Unpleasant odors when turning on AC: Mold and bacteria grow on damp evaporator.

💧 Water leaks inside the footwell: Drainage pipe for evaporator is clogged. Water cannot drain out of the car.

🌀 Abnormal noise when AC is switched on: Compressor belt wear or internal compressor problems.

Simple Daily Maintenance Guidelines

Replace cabin air filter regularly. Suggested cycle: every 10,000‑15,000 km. A clogged filter reduces airflow and causes bad smells.

Keep the condenser clean. Dust, mud and insect debris stuck on the front surface will lower cooling efficiency.

Do not keep AC running until fuel runs low. Long‑time idling AC operation will increase compressor load.

After long‑distance driving with AC, run fan mode for a few minutes before shutting down engine. This helps dry evaporator and prevent mold growth.

For individual car buyers

If cold air becomes noticeably weaker, or strange smell appears, do not wait until total failure. Check the AC system in time. Dirty air filter is the easiest and cheapest item to fix.

For overseas auto dealers

Add air‑conditioning inspection to your pre‑shipment checklist. Test cooling, heating and defogging functions. Clean or replace cabin filters before delivery. Comfort‑related functions strongly affect customer satisfaction.
